Hold BP Accountable

The Gulf oil spill is now the greatest environmental disaster in this country's history, and BP must be held accountable.

Earlier this week, the President outlined a number of steps towards this goal, including the establishment of an independent escrow account to hold funds for cleanup costs and compensation to victims. I applaud the President for these proposals -- but we must go further.

The American people deserve to know exactly what happened, who was responsible, and, most importantly, learn how we can prevent this from happening again. To this end, Congress must act quickly to grant subpoena power to the national commission charged with investigating this disaster. Subpoena powers are crucial to uncovering the truth in major investigations, especially against powerful corporations.
